Epidendrum Orchid Care | Orchid Culture Sheet

Epidendrums are resilient, easy-to-grow orchids that can bloom multiple times a year in a wide variety of colors. Key rule: Avoid moving them around once they find a spot they like, as location changes can trigger a quick decline.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light (50–60% shade cloth/netting is ideal). Protect from harsh afternoon sun, especially in summer. Dark green leaves and lack of blooms indicate insufficient light. An east- or west-facing balcony works great indoors.

  • Water: Water regularly during warm months and reduce frequency during cooler periods. Brief dry periods ( withholding water for ~1 week) can help stimulate flower bud development, provided the plant stays hydrated.

  • Temperature: Thrives in day temperatures of 28% C 32% C and night temperatures of 21% C22% C, though they tolerate much higher heat easily. They can bloom year-round without needing a day/night temperature drop.

  • Humidity & Airflow: Requires 50%-80% humidity and good air circulation at all times. Use misting systems or pebble/humidity trays in dry climates.

POTTING AND FERTILIZER

Plants may also be grown in small pots or baskets filled with an open, fast draining medium like Pine bark that allows the roots to dry rapidly after watering. Repotting or dividing should be done only when new root growth is just starting. This allows the plant to become established in the shortest possible time with the least amount of stress.

Adult plants can be fertilized using a balanced fertilizer like HighGrow fertilizer along with micronutrients or all-in-one fertilizer like Speciality Bio 20 and once a month  using HighBloom fertilizer. Remember to give your plants enough light when you use a high nitrogen fertilizer to prevent rot.
