Dendrobium Care Guide

Dendrobium orchids can be grown as indoor plants as long as they get a sufficient amount of light & air circulation.

  Light

This plant prefers bright indirect light, but can tolerate medium indirect light. Plants grown under ideal light will have apple green leaves and plants which are not getting enough light will have dark green leaves. Learn more about light here

 Watering

In Coconut Husk medium water retention is more compared to Pine Bark, so plants in Coconut Husk may require once in 2-3 days watering compared to 1-2 days watering in Pine Bark.  Medium may dry faster or slower depending on the weather conditions. So always touch and feel the medium, only when partially dry water the plant.  Learn more about watering here

Fertilizing

Fertilizing your orchid regularly provides it with the nutrients it needs for optimal health, immunity and vigorous blooming. Weekly once with Bio-20 or Basfoliar 19:19:19 for growth and rooting. Once a month with Basfoliar 13-40-13. Learn more about fertilizing here

Bring a dramatic "living curtain" display into your home with the breathtaking Dendrobium pierardii sp.! Native to regions stretching from Northeast India across Southeast Asia, this deciduous species is celebrated for its easy-to-grow, pendulous weeping habit and stunning spring blooms.

Flower Specialties

  • Massive Spring Flushes: Blooms burst simultaneously from almost every node of the bare canes, creating a cascading waterfall effect of hundreds of flowers at once.

  • Translucent Color Palette: Features delicate, translucent pastel-pink, light lavender, or mauve petals that contrast beautifully with a large, finely fringed off-white or pale-yellow lip.

  • Sweet Violet Fragrance: Blossoms emit a highly distinct, sweet scent resembling violets or fresh honey.

  • Leafless Blooming: As a deciduous variety, it naturally sheds all its leaves in winter to ensure the gorgeous spring flowers open completely unobstructed.

🌿Care Guide

  • Housing & Mounting: Never pot this plant! Due to its pendulous growth habit, it must be grown mounted (on cork, tree fern slabs, or hanging baskets) allowing the canes to hang upside down.

  • Light & Temperature: Bright, filtered sunlight. Thrives in warm summers (30°C–35°C), but requires cooler winter nights (10°C–15°C) to trigger bud development.

  • Monsoon Phase (March - October): Water heavily—since it is mounted, spray the roots 4–5 times a week (or daily during hot summer spells). Apply a half-strength balanced fertilizer weekly.

  • Strict Winter Rest (November - February): Stop all fertilizer and reduce watering to a bare minimum (mist roots only every 10–14 days if canes shrivel). Leaves yellowing and dropping is normal; winter moisture causes vegetative baby clones ("keikis") instead of flowers.

  • Humidity & Airflow: Maintain 60% to 80% humidity during summer growth, paired with constant, gentle air circulation.
