Cattleya Care Guide
Cattleya Care Guide
Cattleya orchids are very sturdy and can take a lot of abuse from those who tend to forget to water. They are also tolerant of several temperature ranges.
Light
Watering
In Coconut Husk medium water retention is more compared to Pine Bark, so plants in Coconut Husk may require once in 2-3 days watering compared to 1-2 days watering in Pine Bark. Medium may dry faster or slower depending on the weather conditions. So always touch and feel the medium, only when partially dry water the plant. Learn more about watering here
Fertilizing
Fertilizing your orchid regularly provides it with the nutrients it needs for optimal health, immunity and vigorous blooming. Weekly once with Bio-20 or Basfoliar 19:19:19 for growth and rooting. Once a month with Basfoliar 13-40-13. Learn more about fertilizing here

- Color: Produces a stunning color contrast featuring large bronze-copper to golden-brown petals and sepals surrounding a deep purple, almost black labellum (lip).
- Display: Yields a spectacular display of 2 to 4 massive, open flowers stretching up to 16 to 20 cm across on an upright spike rising from the apex of its mature, clavate pseudobulbs.
- Fragrance & Bloom Duration: Exudes an intensely pleasant, spicy or citrus-sweet fragrance that fills the greenhouse environment. It breaks into full bloom during the summer season, with its heavy-textured flowers remaining pristine for several weeks.
- Light: Requires moderate to high, bright indirect sunlight. While it needs strong light to trigger its massive seasonal blooms, it requires slightly less intense light than Laelia purpurata and must be shielded from scorching midday sun to preserve its stiff, dark green leaves.
- Watering: Demands a generous wet-to-dry watering schedule. Water heavily and frequently during its active spring and summer growing periods, ensuring the fast-draining potting medium (such as coarse pine bark, charcoal, or clay balls) dries out quickly between waterings to safeguard its sensitive root system from rot.
- Temperature: Thrives in standard intermediate to warm conditions, keeping daytime temperatures comfortably between 20°C and 32°C. It is famously intolerant of cold drafts; ensure winter nighttime temperatures stay mild and never drop low enough to induce surface chill damage.
