Cattleya Care Guide

Cattleya orchids are very sturdy and can take a lot of abuse from those who tend to forget to water. They are also tolerant of several temperature ranges.

  Light

This plant prefers bright indirect light, but can tolerate medium indirect light. Plants grown under ideal light will have apple green leaves and plants which are not getting enough light will have dark green leaves. Learn more about light here

 Watering

In Coconut Husk medium water retention is more compared to Pine Bark, so plants in Coconut Husk may require once in 2-3 days watering compared to 1-2 days watering in Pine Bark.  Medium may dry faster or slower depending on the weather conditions. So always touch and feel the medium, only when partially dry water the plant.  Learn more about watering here

Fertilizing

Fertilizing your orchid regularly provides it with the nutrients it needs for optimal health, immunity and vigorous blooming. Weekly once with Bio-20 or Basfoliar 19:19:19 for growth and rooting. Once a month with Basfoliar 13-40-13. Learn more about fertilizing here

Add a legendary masterpiece to your collection with the Cattleya purpurata var. alba. A stunning color form of the iconic species native to coastal Brazil, this orchid is highly celebrated for its pristine snowy-white blooms and intoxicating perfume. It is an exceptionally tough, rewarding grower that loves bright light and warm conditions, making it an absolute classic and an easy-care favorite for any indoor gardener.

✨ Flower Specialties

  • Yellow Throat Contrast: Pristine snowy-white sepals, petals, and frilled lips are elegantly anchored by a striking bright yellow or golden-yellow center tucked inside the tube-like throat.

  • Impressive Flower Heads: A single, sturdy stem arising from the club-shaped pseudobulbs can carry an amazing cluster of 3 to 7 massive blooms at the same time.

  • Alluring Fragrance: The large blossoms release a powerful, sweet fragrance that effortlessly fills an entire room.

  • Late Spring to Fall Bloomer: Puts on its main, jaw-dropping flower show from late spring through fall, with individual flowers staying crisp and beautiful for 15 to 20 days.

🪴Care Guide

This Brazilian tree-growing epiphyte is exceptionally straightforward to cultivate at home:

  • ☀️ Sunlight: Provide bright, filtered light year-round. It needs more light than regular Cattleyas and handles gentle morning sun well. Aim for medium-to-light green leaves; dark green means it needs more sun to bloom.

  • 💧 Watering & Winter Rest: Water heavily so it runs freely through the pot, then let it dry out completely (about a week) before watering again. Provide a drier, cooler rest period during the winter months.

  • 🪵 Potting Mix: Grow in a highly draining, coarse medium like large orchid bark, charcoal, and perlite. Slotted clay pots or baskets that allow maximum airflow to the roots are ideal.

  • 🌡️ Temperature & Climate: Prefers warm daytime temperatures between 21–29°C and cooler nights around 13–18°C. Maintain 50–70% humidity with continuous, gentle air circulation to protect against root rot.
