Oncidium Care Guide

The Oncidium family is very large and includes many flower varieties. Most of them flowers in Spring and Fall.

  Light

Oncidium orchids grow well under medium light. However certain hybrids from Thailand can even grown in bright indirect light. Learn more about light here

 Watering

Please be careful with the watering as the Sphagnum moss medium retains too much moisture. The medium could take up to a week to dry. Other medium like Pine bark dries within 1 or 2 days. Medium may dry faster or slower depending on the weather conditions. So always touch and feel the medium, only when partially dry water the plant.  Learn more about watering here

Fertilizing

Weekly once with Bio-20 or Basfoliar 19:19:19 for growth and rooting. Once a month with Basfoliar 13-40-13. Learn more about fertilizing here

Description

Bring wild exotic beauty into your collection with Trichocentrum Ollie Palmer! A world class hybrid cross of Trichocentrum Maureen and Trichocentrum haematochilum, this stunning "mule ear" orchid produces dramatic leopard-patterned blossoms paired with an intense, bi color lip. Long lasting and richly scented, its waxy blooms release a sweet, citrusy fragrance that brightens any bright indoor space or greenhouse!

🌸 Flower Specialties

  • Parentage: An exceptional cross of Trichocentrum Maureen × Trichocentrum haematochilum, combining robust "mule ear" growth with prolific, branched flower spikes.

  • Leopard-Patterned Sepals & Petals: Features greenish yellow petals heavily spotted with deep chocolate-brown to reddish brown leopard markings for a striking contrast.

  • Vibrant Bi Color Lip: Displays a prominent, fan shaped lower lip that transitions from a rich, intense fuchsia pink center to flared, soft white edges.

  • Sweet, Zesty Fragrance: Waxy blooms release a sweet, intoxicating perfume with noticeable lemony undertones a few days after opening.

  • Prolific & Long Lasting: Mature plants produce branching spikes hosting dozens of long-lasting flowers that stay fresh for up to 4 to 5 weeks.

🌿 Comprehensive Care Guide

  • ☀️ Light: Requires bright, indirect sunlight (similar to Cattleya light conditions). Provide shade during intense midday sun to prevent leaf scorch.

  • 💧 Watering: Follow a strict wet to dry cycle. Soak thoroughly, then allow the potting media to dry out completely before watering again. Its thick "mule ear" leaves store water, making it drought tolerant but prone to rot if kept soggy.

  • 🌡️ Temperature: Thrives in intermediate to warm temperatures between 24°C and 30°C during the day. Protect from temperatures dropping below 13°C.

  • 🪵 Substrate & Mounting: Requires ultra-draining media like coarse fir bark, charcoal, or perlite. It performs exceptionally well mounted on cork slabs or in slatted wooden baskets.

  • 💨 Humidity & Air Movement: Prefers 60%–80% atmospheric humidity. Strong, continuous air circulation is essential to prevent fungal spots on its broad leaves.

  • ❄️ Winter Care: Scale back watering frequency slightly during the cool winter rest period when growth slows down.
