Cattleya Care Guide

Cattleya orchids are very sturdy and can take a lot of abuse from those who tend to forget to water. They are also tolerant of several temperature ranges.

  Light

This plant prefers bright indirect light, but can tolerate medium indirect light. Plants grown under ideal light will have apple green leaves and plants which are not getting enough light will have dark green leaves. Learn more about light here

 Watering

In Coconut Husk medium water retention is more compared to Pine Bark, so plants in Coconut Husk may require once in 2-3 days watering compared to 1-2 days watering in Pine Bark.  Medium may dry faster or slower depending on the weather conditions. So always touch and feel the medium, only when partially dry water the plant.  Learn more about watering here

Fertilizing

Fertilizing your orchid regularly provides it with the nutrients it needs for optimal health, immunity and vigorous blooming. Weekly once with Bio-20 or Basfoliar 19:19:19 for growth and rooting. Once a month with Basfoliar 13-40-13. Learn more about fertilizing here

Cattleya Laelia (L.) purpurata f. schusteriana 'Chief' is a beautiful dark form of the legendary species Cattleya purpurata. Found naturally on tall trees near coastal areas in Brazil, this classic, robust species is considered an absolute must-have for any serious Cattleya collection. These grow into big, magnificent plants and take a few years to reach true flowering size. . The clonal name 'Chief' designates a specific selected cultivar or award-quality line within this variety.
🌸 Flower Specialty
  • Color: Belonging to the prized 'schusteriana' color form, it features elegant white petals dynamically contrasted by a deep, dark purple lip.
  • Display: Displays a striking show of three to five flowers per stem, creating a magnificent crown of color above its large, dark green leaves.
  • Fragrance & Bloom Duration: Produces long-lasting and highly fragrant blossoms that make them stand out in any space. It breaks into full beauty from late spring to fall.
🌿 Care Guide
  • Light: Requires moderate light year-round to properly mature its large pseudobulbs. A bright windowsill or shaded greenhouse environment provides the perfect light intensity to keep the plant sturdy.
  • Watering & Winter Rest: Water regularly during the active spring and summer growing season, allowing the medium to dry out slightly. A drier winter rest is required during the cooler months to trigger future flower sheaths and safeguard the roots.
  • Temperature & Substrate: This is a famously cool-tolerant, robust species that handles seasonal temperature drops beautifully. It grows best in a coarse, highly aerated potting mixture like large pine bark or charcoal that ensures rapid drainage.
