Vanilla planifolia is a species of the vanilla orchid. This one has variegated leaves. It is native to Mexico and Belize. Vanilla is a climbing orchid vine that produces a pod that looks like a string bean. These pods are dried and cured to extract the vanilla flavoring. The vanilla orchid flowers are white, tinged with a bit of green. They don't smell like vanilla. They don't have any fragrances at all. It is one of the primary sources of vanilla flavoring, due to its high vanillin content. Vanilla is the second most expensive spice after saffron because of the intensive labor required to grow its pods.
