Monsoon Orchid Care

Monsoon Care for your orchids.

Orchids can easily catch infections from various fungi or bacteria during monsoon months as the moist and humid environment required for their optimum growth provides prime conditions for the growth of these fungi or bacteria.  To reduce the risk of infections, keep the leaves dry and improve the air flow in the growing area. Monitoring the plants regularly will help to detect early symptoms. Prevention is always the best cure. Application of preventative fungicides/bactericides will also help to keep the risk low.

Prevention is always the best cure.

It is best to use biological control spray once in 15 days, in order to reduce the risk of recurring fungal and bacterial infections. We recommend bio-control methods as a preventative method and only in case of severe infection we recommend a chemical treatment.

The first step to treat any infection is to cut/remove the infected area using sterile instruments immediately upon observation. The entire growing area should also be disinfected with a 10% bleach solution.  In addition to this, a good bactericide or Fungicide should be sprayed on the affected plant as well as all nearby plants in order to stop the infection from spreading. In addition to this, the leaves should be kept dry and water should not be allowed to accumulate on them.

Sometimes, these fungal/bacterial diseases become a recurring problem which is why it’s best to use biological control spray once in 15 days, in order to reduce the risk of recurring fungal and bacterial infections. We recommend bio-control methods as preventative method and only in case of severe infection we recommend a chemical treatment. As bacterial/Fungal diseases spread through water, it is important to avoid using an overhead watering system when a plant becomes infected.

Bio-control methods

Defender Bio-F (Bacillus subtilis) and Defender Bio-B (Pseudomonas fluorescens) are naturally-occurring bacteria that can be used to prevent and control fungal and bacterial infections in plants.

Defender Bio-F (Bacillus subtilis) is spore forming bacteria which, when applied to the seeds or plants, colonize the developing root system of the plants, this bacteria compete with harmful micro organisms and thereby suppress them. Bacillus subtilis continue to live on the root system and provide protection throughout the growing season.

Defender Bio-B (Pseudomonas fluorescens) suppresses plant diseases by production of number of secondary metabolites including antibiotics, siderophores and hydrogen cyanide. This microbe has the unique ability to enter the plant vascular system, reach the various parts of the plant system and act as a systemic bio-control agent against various fungal and bacterial diseases.

Benefits of Defender Bio-F and Defender Bio-B is as follows:

  • - Broad spectrum control of fungal/bacterial diseases
  • - Little potential for infection to create resistance to treatment
  • - No temperature restrictions for use
  • - Non-toxic to beneficial insects (including honey bees)
  • - Safe to use up to and including the day of harvest
  • - Some products based on B. subtilis are approved for organic production.
  • - Safe to use with predatory insects

We recommend 5ml of Defender Bio- F, Defender Bio-B and BlackGold mixed together in one litre of water, sprayed (preferably in the evening) in once in 15 days will give you the best results. Please note, as they are live bacteria, you must avoid usage of any chemical fungicide or bactericide.
